PRESS RELEASE
Tokyo, June 25, 2026 – The Ambassador of the Republic of Angola to Japan, Teodolinda Rosa Rodrigues Coelho, today paid tribute to the former President of the Democratic Republic of Timor-Leste, Francisco Guterres “Lu-Olo,” who passed away on June 21 in Kuala Lumpur due to illness.
At the official residence of Timor-Leste in the Japanese capital, Tokyo, the Angolan diplomat expressed her condolences to her counterpart, Maria Terezinha da Silva Viegas.
In the message she left in the book of condolences, she mourned the death of a man who dedicated his life to the struggle for independence, the promotion of national unity, dialogue, peace, and political stability in his country.
Francisco Guterres “Lu-Olo” served as President of Timor-Leste from 2017 to 2022.
Relations between Angola and Timor-Leste are marked, above all, by historical, linguistic, and diplomatic ties, as both countries are former Portuguese colonies.
Both states are members of the Community of Portuguese-Speaking Countries (CPLP), an organization that promotes political, economic, cultural, and educational cooperation among Portuguese-speaking countries.
