The President of the Republic, João Lourenço, today called for the adoption of concrete measures in Luanda to make the conflict prevention and resolution tools available on the African continent more effective.
Speaking at the African Union’s Extraordinary Session, dedicated to strengthening conflict prevention and resolution mechanisms in Africa, the Head of State emphasized the need to improve existing tools to prevent conflicts, mediate crises, and ensure the implementation of decisions collectively adopted by African countries.
João Lourenço expressed his conviction that the session should mark a turning point in efforts to fully activate the continent’s existing conflict prevention and resolution mechanisms.
The President of the Republic argued that the proceedings should lead to the adoption of concrete measures, with clearly defined responsibilities and effective monitoring mechanisms.
Diplomatic and Financial Instruments
For João Lourenço, Africa must mobilize the available political, diplomatic, financial, and institutional instruments to prevent conflicts before they escalate into wars, as well as work to bring existing conflicts to an end as quickly as possible.
He emphasized that peace is not only a prerequisite for economic development and the dignity of peoples, but also for the stability of states and the realization of Agenda 2063, “The Africa We Want.”
The Head of State also called for collective responsibility in creating conditions that will allow future generations to live on a continent free from wars and violent armed conflicts—one that is more integrated, prosperous, and secure.
Finally, João Lourenço expressed his hope that the discussions would be frank and constructive, focused on decisions capable of effectively contributing to the building of a more peaceful and stable Africa.
