On Monday in Belgrade, Serbia, Angola called for the strengthening of multilateralism and respect for the principles of sovereignty, independence, equality, peaceful coexistence, and cooperation, considering them fundamental to addressing current international challenges.
This position was expressed by Foreign Minister Téte António while addressing the High-Level Meeting marking the 65th anniversary of the First Conference of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM), on behalf of President João Lourenço.
According to Téte António, the principles that gave rise to the Movement remain relevant today in an international context marked by geopolitical tensions, conflicts, inequalities, and growing fragmentation.
The minister emphasized that nonalignment “has never meant indifference” or “isolation,” but rather the assertion of sovereignty and the conviction that dialogue and cooperation must prevail over confrontation.
He therefore argued that states must have the freedom to pursue their national interests, choose their partners, and participate in international affairs without being forced to join divisions they did not create.
Téte António also reaffirmed Angola’s commitment to the purposes and principles of the United Nations Charter, including sovereignty, territorial integrity, political independence, self-determination, and the peaceful resolution of conflicts, as well as the integrity and reputation of the Corridor and efforts to enhance its attractiveness.
