PRESS RELEASE

Tokyo, the capital city of Japan, hosted on Friday, March 29th, the First Political Consultations Meeting between the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Angola and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Japan, at the Director level, held within the framework of the Agreement on Political Consultations between the two countries signed in 2011.

The Angolan delegation was led by Ambassador Miguel DIALAMICUA, Director of Asia and Oceania at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and included H.E. Teodolinda Rodrigues Coelho, Ambassador of Angola to Japan. The Japanese delegation was headed by Ambassador Toshihiko HORIUCHI, Director-General of the African Affairs Department at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The occasion provided an opportunity for both parties to address issues of bilateral, regional, and international interest, particularly in the political and diplomatic domains. During the same meeting, both parties reviewed the state of existing cooperation between the two countries, with a particular emphasis on the Agreement on Liberalization, Protection, and Promotion of Investments (ALPPI) signed last August and its significance for improving the business environment. On the other hand, issues related to economic reforms in Angola and its openness to investment through visa facilitation and exemptions, streamlining procedures for private investment, as well as the exchange of high-level visits, were also highlighted.

Both parties also addressed issues related to international cooperation forums, particularly regarding aspects related to the Tokyo International Conference on African Development (TICAD), and Japan’s contribution to the continent’s development through the creation of partnerships and investments in African countries.

Within the scope of the regional and international agenda, the two countries had the opportunity to address the issue of major regional conflicts in Africa, Europe (with a focus on Ukraine), as well as in the Middle East region. In this regard, Japan recognized and valued Angola’s efforts within the framework of peace processes in Africa and its regional leadership, while Angola acknowledged the leadership role that Japan has developed in the field of multilateral diplomacy.

At the multilateral level, the importance of seeking a position regarding the reform of the United Nations Security Council was highlighted.

Both parties agreed to coordinate their schedules to hold a high-level meeting between the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Angola and the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Japan within the framework of the existing Agreement.
