Francisco Furtado, who was speaking at the main ceremony of the February 4, 1961 celebrations, stressed that “we must never forget that 65 years ago, a group of brave young combatants brandished machetes to face the repressive police and the heavily armed Portuguese colonial troops.”

According to the Minister of State, the burning desire to see Angola free from colonial oppression spoke louder than fear, turning those combatants into symbols of courage, sacrifice, and patriotism.

“The annual celebration of February 4th constitutes a just and permanent tribute to these sons of Angola, who bequeathed to us, through their living example, the meaning of the struggle for the national flag and the high cost of freedom,” he underlined.

Francisco Furtado further noted that the choice of Cabinda province to host this important event is a result of the historical contribution it played in the national liberation struggle.
